The average app price for News plummeted by a category-leading 21% in Q1 2011 versus Q4 2010 in the UK. News has the lowest average price point of any category by far hitting a new low of £0.31 with only Social Networking and Weather also under the pound mark. The result is that News effectively represents 0% share of average app pricing on a comparative category basis. (refer to iPad App Share for Average Paid App Pricing by Category, Q1 2011). The weakness in paid app pricing in the News category is pervasive in all price bands (refer to iPad App Share by News Category, Q1 2011). News also has the highest percentage share of free apps at 81% far exceeding the next closest categories; Business and Social Networking at 56% and 52% respectively (refer to iPad Top 10 Categories for % of Free Apps). Clearly, the monetization model dejour for News in the UK is either; ad revenues and/or in-app subscription.
